FT-86 and BRZ Spotlight from Tokyo Auto Salon 2012

Whether you first saw one in Initial D, in a Keiichi Tsuchiya video or at a local drift event the AE-86 is the OG of the JDM world especially when it comes to drifting. It’s no surprise then that the highlights of the Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 were the cencept variations of the new Toyota FT-86 (Scion FR-S in North America) and the Subaru BRZ which are the continuation of the AE-86 legacy. The Toyota FT-86 and Subaru BRZ are the hottest topic on automotive threads and in automotive clubs worldwide right now, so of course they were all the hype at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon.

Even in their pre-production state these cars were scattered around the grounds in all forms and varieties. The two main attractions were of course the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) FT-86, and Subaru’s BRZ STi concept which was also constantly surrounded by captivated enthusiasts. Surprisingly though these were not the only forms in which the FT-86 and BRZ appeared in at the show. There were more than eight variations of these cars including the Modellista version of the FT-86, the Gazoo Racing variation of the FT-86, a beautiful Prova Black edition of the BRZ with more radical aero kits, the Proud of Boxer racing edition of the BRZ, an HKS FT-86, a UpGarage FT-86, a Falken/Dunlop FT-86, and last but not least a demo FT-86 that that was used to show the handling characteristics of the vehicle. Here’s what the Tokyo Auto Salon had on display.

The amount of aftermarket interior, exterior and performance parts on display before the car has even gone on sale is a good sign for tuners who are looking to use the FT-86 and BRZ merely as a base to build from. From all out drift car to SuperGT status, which rendition would you chose?
