Summit Racing Powdercoating Kit

Powdercoating is a durable finish for parts that is very different from traditional painting. Painted parts require a cleaning, priming and few coats, then a clear to seal the finish. Powdercoating is essentially the application of a dry powder color as opposed to one mixed with a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts as a liquid.

When you add expensive aftermarket parts to your ride, you want to protect your investment and keep it looking new for years to come. For most enthusiasts, adding upgrades is a long process and by the time they’re complete, they’re staring to look worn and corroded. It is almost impossible to keep the show car finish unless you don’t drive your car at all. Painted parts scratch, anodizing fades and untreated parts rust after the first rainfall. It can be very draining to pull off critical parts and spend hundreds of dollars to get them chromed, anodized or powdercoated and wait weeks for the work to be completed. Summit Racing has devised and alternative, one that can be done in your garage.

For powdercoating, parts are electrostatically charged and then the part is cured with heat to allow the particles to flow together. The end result is an extremely durable coating that is superior to conventional paint. The process is ideal for hard parts where durability is important and calls for a thick coating. Powdercoating is not ideal for thinner applications where it can orange-peel. So if it is a hard part that needs a thick protective shell for durability and looks, then powdercoating is the way to go.

Traditionally, powdercoating was very expensive to do and your car would be out for weeks while the shop takes its time getting it done. Summit Racing decided the market was ready for a home powdercoating kit. So now you can have the same durable coating done the way you want, in the exact colour you desire, all for a price that is less than doing a single part!

The kit comes with a heavy duty application gun to evenly spray the powder. The gun features an internal air distribution system that eliminates the need for a noisy external air compressor. The variable speed trigger helps apply the right amount for an even thickness. The quick change powder cartridge is simple for novice users and convenient if you run out mid-job. Also supplied are ten reusable support hooks to hang parts, ten reusable silicone plugs, a 24m roll of high temp masking tape, carrying case and 120V adapter. The powdercoating media comes separate in dozens of different colours.

Application for parts is simple. All parts should be cleaned and degreased and hung with supplied hooks. The “paint booth” area in your garage should be sealed off with vapor barrier to prevent powder covering your possessions. After an even coat of powder has clung to the object, it should be placed in a non-food preparation over to heat to 400°F to cure properly. Of course, the part being powdercoated should be able to sustain those temperatures in an oven. Once cured it is ready to install back on your car.

Your ride will never look the same again with the Summit Racing Powdercoating Kit in your garage. No more costly waiting for parts to get refinished- just pull it off, powdercoat it and get back on the road in no time.
