[Tuner Battlegrounds Season 12 Runner-Up]
For many car enthusiasts, a dream car is something they chase for years. For Peter Diaz, the 1985 Toyota Corolla GTS—better known as the AE86—was a dream that became a lifelong reality. His passion for the AE86 started at the age of 12, growing up around old-school Toyotas and dreaming of the sleek, pop-up headlight hatchback that would later become his very own project.
Peter’s first encounter with an AE86 came when his older cousin picked him up in one. The hatchback’s aggressive aero, flip-up headlights, and overall aesthetic clearly left a lasting impression. From that moment, Peter knew that no other car would satisfy his desire quite like the 1985 Corolla GTS. After saving up from summer jobs, he finally purchased his own AE86 nearly two years later, marking the beginning of a lifelong bond with this chassis.
For any enthusiast, owning a car for over four years often means a few different iterations. After 24 years, it means many. Peter’s AE86 is no exception. Over the years, the car has seen different engines, interiors, paint jobs, and wheel setups. One of the most significant milestones in its evolution came in 2009, when the engine blew. Life responsibilities took priority, and the project was put on hold.
In 2022, after more than a decade, the car moved under its own power again—this time with a fresh JDM 4AGE Blacktop 20V swap. Most noticeably, an ITB setup adorns the 4AGE, which not only looks gorgeous, but sounds just as good. Peter’s AE86 is a masterpiece of original JDM parts and tasteful modifications. The car features a JDM Kouki Trueno front bumper with clear signal covers, a molded Trueno front lip, and OEM Toyota auto cover fog lights. The J-Blood rear garnishes, molded into the bumper, give the car a unique and seamless look, while JDM Kouki Redline taillights maintain its period-correct styling.

One of the most striking aspects of the build is its full color change to Acura Fire Pepper Red Pearl—a vibrant hue that makes the AE86 stand out while maintaining an elegant finish. Stepping inside, it’s clear Peter didn’t cut any corners. The interior features Recaro LXC mesh seats, ensuring both comfort and support. A TOM’S Racing steering wheel, horn button, shift knob, and pedals add a motorsport touch.

Bringing the AE86 back to life after 13 years of sitting was no small task, and Peter credits much of the success to the support from his family, friends, and car club, Team Toyminator. His wife and children were his biggest motivators, standing by him as he pieced together the Blacktop 20V swap. Friends also played a key role in getting the swap done.
Peter’s AE86 is a perfect example of why the Toyota Corolla GTS remains an icon. This build represents the essence of classic car culture, proving that with dedication, a dream car can become a lifelong companion. As Peter continues refining and enjoying his AE86, it serves as an inspiration to enthusiasts worldwide. Whether it’s carving through mountain roads, attending car meets, or simply taking a nostalgic Sunday drive, this AE86 is a rolling testament to what makes old-school Toyotas so special.
