No Backup Plan
John Santos – 1991 Toyota MR2

John Santos’ relationship with the MR2 spans over a decade and four chassis, but this particular 1991 example—plucked out of Alabama and trusted immediately for a 12-hour drive home—feels like the one that stuck. After reluctantly parting ways with a previous MR2 Turbo of his in California due to a cross-country move, Santos kept his eyes peeled for something that could fill the void. It wasn’t until this red SW20 surfaced that things started to click again.
No screwdrivers, no backup plan—just the kind of trust that only comes out of a desire deeper than the car’s monetary value.
Underneath the beautiful Ferrari Red resprayed shell, the real story lives in the engine bay—or what’s left of it. Thanks to a meticulous shave and tuck job by TCS Motorsports, the 4th-gen 3SGTE is the centerpiece with no distractions. It’s not just for show, either. With 405 wheel horsepower and 365 lb-ft on tap, the build leans on a combo of GSC billet cams, Wiseco pistons, and a Comp Turbo CTR3081E with the throwback T51R mod to deliver usable power in a package that’s been well executed. The supporting cast includes a South Bend Stage 2 clutch, Wilwood brakes up front, and CRW axle cages to keep things from coming apart when the boost kicks in.

Visually, the MR2 mixes late-’90s tuner nostalgia with some newer composite touches. Border’s carbon hood and Shine Auto’s lip play well with the Bomex rear spats, while the Work VS-XX wheels and carbon Kevmannz seats round out the vibe inside and out. It’s a blend that feels neither overdone nor rushed, giving the MR2 the kind of balance you’d expect from someone who’s owned four of these. As Santos puts it, this car helped him through more than just a hobby to stay busy—it also got him through some tough times. With a crew like Brothers Garage, Team Emotion, and TCS Motorsports in the mix, it’s safe to say it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
