Starting Point: Nick Green's 2014 Scion FR-S

Photos by Rob Anzit (Basic Builds)

Before starting the modification process on his Scion FR-S, Nick Green had little knowledge of the automotive scene in and around his local area. At the time, all he knew is that he wanted a reliable and affordable sports car with great handling. The widespread aftermarket support for the FR-S platform is a big part of the reason he chose the car as his starting point. “Throughout the few years the FR-S has been out, the aftermarket scene has grown substantially, which also keeps the car fun and exciting as I’m always able to add something, or do something differently,” he writes.

“This is my first car I’ve been able to build and I can honestly say its been a fulfilling challenge,” Green continues. “Getting accepted into shows, winning awards, meeting fellow car enthusiasts has been an absolute joy.” His enthusiastic entry into the car scene probably strikes a chord with many of our readers, as most of us have fond memories of our first tuner projects.

Green says that his original plan was to keep the car stock (we’ve all heard that one before), but after joining forums and seeing the passion that went into other builds, he knew he wanted to compete in shows and build the car to suit himself more. After research and discussions with other FR-S owners, he carefully chose parts based on quality recommendations from people who had used them before with positive results.

The advice of others combined with his own personal tastes has resulted in an exhaust system comprised of Kakimoto, Borla, DC Sports and Invidia to sing the boxer-four’s signature song. The finishing touch on the project to date is his GT86 conversion, which includes a complete custom GT86 interior and badge swap, embracing the platform’s original concept.
