When it comes to Sport Compact performance, it is a commonly held belief that you have to find gear from Japan that will be effective. But there are a few domestic alternatives that are seeing growth in this marketplace and when it comes to hard parts, SCAT Enterprises is making some bold moves. SCAT has been perfecting their craft for over 45 years and their level of engineering and exacting tolerances is just what complex import engines need.
While there may be a handful of pistons and rods available for import engines, finding crankshafts has been even more problematic. This situation pertains to engines which were domestically available in USDM cars, never mind JDM only mills such as the SR20 and the legendary RB26DETT found in the Skyline GT-R. SCAT realized that the potential to swap these motors was huge. Many of them were failing with stock internals that were used and abused, so it became apparent that hardcore US-made parts were needed. For that reason SCAT hopped on board with a number of products for the RB26 motor.
With advanced facilities to serve multi-billion dollar companies like General Motors, Daimler Chrysler and Ford, SCAT also does some private labeling so you may have come across their products before. SCAT can make any Sport Compact crankshaft out of billet material to your custom specifications but they also offer an off the shelf RB26 crank. SCAT cranks are made from 4340 steel or EN30B material and come in different counterweight designs: Standard Weight or Superlight
All of SCAT’s Standard Weight billet and forged crankshafts come with straight shot and chamfered oil holes, all of them are Nitride-hardened for superior wear resistance too. They also feature large radius on all journals and are precision-ground, heat-treated and shot-peened for durability. SCAT’s Superlight design has the minimal amount of material left making it ideal for competition engines using lightweight components, and running higher RPM’s for faster acceleration.
Complementing their line of Sport Compact crankshafts is a complete line of H-Beam connecting rods for the Nissan RB26 motor (in addition to: Honda/Acura, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Toyota powerplants). The 4340 H-Beam connecting rods come standard with ARP 3/8-inch cap screw bolts and feature a special doweled cap for specific cap-to-rod adjustment. Some RB26 motors crank out horsepower in the quadruple digits and the stress on the rods is immense but SCAT has that market covered.
If it is off the shelf parts or some custom applications through their US Crankshaft division, SCAT is ready to support the Sport Compact market now and into the future.
