After a long build-up, which included press releases, concepts, and various teaser videos, Genesis has, as at long last, finally unveiled its first factory-backed race car, the GMR-001 Hypercar.
The racer, with a name that stands for Genesis Magma Racing when spelled out, was shown at the New York auto show in its official livery, which extended not only to the car, but also to the team’s firesuits.
The GMR-001 Hypercar will make its debut in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship, which includes the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2027, it will begin competing in the North American IMSA SportsCar Championship.
Like current Genesis models, the GMR-001 carries familiar brand design cues, including Two-line lighting at the front and rear. Designed at Genesis Design Europe under the guidance of Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke, the GMR-001’s bodywork features a Parabolic Line that runs along its sides, along with a flat undertray for aerodynamic efficiency, and integrated inlets for cooling efficiency.
Finished in Magma orange, the signature color of Genesis Racing, the GMR-001 features Korean Hanguel lettering that spells out “Magma” in, “geometric motifs that echo the team’s logo,” Genesis said in a statement. The Magma orange finish features a gradient that goes from orange at the front of the car to deep red at the rear.
Absent from the reveal, however, were specifications. Genesis said the GMR-001’s powertrain and chassis are being co-developed with ORECA Motorsport, a French race car constructor, that has built racers for Acura, Alpine, and Peugeot.
However, the one thing we can say for sure – because it was in the press release – is that the GMR-001 will be powered by a twin-turbo V8, which is likely being developed internally within Hyundai Motorsport, the parent company of Genesis Magma Racing.
