Toyota has taken the wraps off the 2027 GR86, and it comes with several updates that are bound to find favor with track rats and everyday enthusiasts alike.
The first public viewing, which took place at FuelFest, a car culture event in the Bay Area of California, showed off one of the biggest changes, which is a new gray exterior finish called Thunder. According to Toyota, Thunder is a solid gray color that changes depending on the light source.
Mechanical changes to the 2027 GR86 include refining, “the relationship between accelerator input and torque delivery to help create a smoother, more linear response,” according to a statement from Toyota. The chamfer of the shifter interlock between fourth and fifth gear has been widened by about 0.02 inches for smoother shift feel.
New color options for the cabin are also being added, including Cockpit Red, which includes black Ultrasuede and red leather accents on the side bolsters, along with red floor mats and red door trim. A black option, with black Ultrasuede with black trim, is also available. (NOTE: Toyota has not released any cabin photos featuring these color schemes.)
A Performance Package is also available for GR86 and GR86 Premium trims. Among the slew of chassis mods are Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers. The The Brembos have red painted four-piston front calipers and two-piston rear brake calipers. The SACHS dampers feature high-pressure nitrogen and oil that are, “designed to absorb vibrations across a wide range of speeds, maximize ground contact, and support firm, stable steering, while also balancing road feedback and ride comfort,” according to Toyota.
As was the case previously, all 2027 GR86s are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that drives the rear wheels and produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. Both trims (GR86 and GR86 Premium) will be available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2027 GR86 is slated to go on sale this summer. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
