If anyone was wondering if Volkswagen would do anything special to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Golf R, the brain trust in Wolfsburg has answered with an emphatic yes.
Next year, Volkswagen R, the company’s in-house tuning arm, will race in the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race with a modified Golf R. The race car, which is currently in development with partner Max Kruse Racing, should resemble the car in these photos.
Volkswagen R isn’t saying anything about the car’s specs and technology just yet, but expectations are sky high.
“Even though we don’t want to reveal much about the technology yet: fans of the 24h Nürburgring can look forward to the most spectacular Golf R to date,” Reinhold Ivenz, Head of Volkswagen R, said in a statement.
With this announcement we can’t help but wonder if Volkswagen has any special production car plans for the Golf R, which began with the legendary VR6-powered Golf R32 in 2002.
All we can say is stay tuned.
